ファイティングファンタジーシリーズは、ゲームブックの中で世界で最も有名な作品群といえるでしょう。
このシリーズは、スティーブ・ジャクソン、イアン・リビングストン両氏によって制作され、英国のペンギン・ブックスから出版されました。本国では全59作品が上梓され、当時大きなゲームブックブームが巻き起こっていた日本でも、社会思想社から次々と日本語版が出版されていたのです。

しかし、コンピュータゲームの隆盛とともにゲームブックの人気は次第に衰え、オリジナルの第60作になるはずだった「Bloodbone」は未完に終わりました。
その後英国では、アイコン・ブックスが権利を買い、「ウィザード・ブックス」というブランドでファイティングファンタジーシリーズのいくつかが再版されました。その際にはいくつか新作も刊行されています。
ウィザードブックス版としては、シリーズ1で29作、シリーズ2で17作が出版されました。第一作「火吹き山の魔法使い」はもとより、初期の名作「バルサスの要塞」「死のワナの地下迷宮」や、ジャクソン氏による「地獄の館」「サイボーグを倒せ」「モンスター誕生」、リビングストン氏の「迷宮探険競技」「死の軍団」といった人気の高い作品は、繰り返し選ばれています。

日本でも、初期作のいくつかが扶桑社から再版されたほか、ホビージャパンから「デストラップダンジョン」「サムライソード」「ハウスオブヘル」の三作がライトノベル風に翻案して公刊されています。

あと、地味にNTTドコモのiモードアプリでもファイティングファンタジーが遊べたんですよね。特に「火吹き山再び」とかは最初で最後の日本語版だったと思います。
